village hideaway
LOCATION: Northeast Harbor, ME
Status: phase 1 completed 2020
At this sweetly re-imagined in-town cottage, the arrival side of the house had some functional heavy-lifting to do, while the hidden courtyard behind had some social engineering to manage - all with style and grace! At the street an underutilized long front lawn was converted to ample but attractive parking for cars and bikes, with a welcoming front walk and classic gardens. But around the corner, a gem of a hidden courtyard is filled with gorgeous textures of fern, grass, and birch, creating eddies for activities with softly crunching peastone paths and reclaimed granite seating spots. These layers also serve to create privacy for the guest and play-houses, and create a sense of escape and wonder within a tight envelope.
