At an adorable family camp in mid-coast Maine, the magic is in the small moments of connection - paths between cabins, steps to the beach, greetings at a front door. The design effort was functional - adding steps to slick grass slopes to allow easier access to both cabins and beach, adding boulders and plantings and regrading the site to move drainage around structures and limit erosion, and carving out quiet spots for program like parking or grilling or swinging in the hammock. But a graceful palette of lakeside natives, layered with colorful perennials to attract hummingbirds and butterflies, softens the edges between these adjacent destinations, and makes for a magical summer escape.
